Chickweed is loaded with nutrition, being high in chlorophyll, minerals,especially calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, phosphorus & potassium, vitamins,especially C, A & B factors such as Folic Acid, riboflavin, niacin & thiamine.
Chickweed is a small, spreading plant that helps
eczema & other skin problems. It is used to treat
insect bites,
stings,
rheumatic conditions,
urinary infections,
indigestion,
constipation &
wounds.
Applied externally, finely chopped chickweed soothes irritated skin, especially when mixed with marsh mallow (Althaea officinale) root. It's good for
cuts,
minor burns,
eczema &
rashes. Bandage it on the affected area. Change the dressing often.
This herb is excellent for
blood vessels & your
circulatory system.
Chickweed works as an
appetite depressant & is used in many
weight loss herbal combinations.
An infusion of the dried herb is used in
coughs &
hoarseness & is beneficial in the treatment of
kidney complaints.
The decoction is also used externally to treat
rheumatic pains,
wounds &
ulcers. It can be applied as a medicinal poultice & will relieve any kind of
roseola & is effective wherever there are
fragile superficial veins or
itching skin conditions.
Fresh chickweed makes a cooling poultice for
boils,
abscesses,
splinters &
infected sores. As the poultice dries, it pulls out poisons & toxins.
Chickweed has astringent properties & is a good remedy for many skin conditions when added to creams & ointments. Use on
wounds,
irritated skin,
rash,
acne,
eczema,
bedsores &
painful joints as needed.
Chickweed tea is good for
cleansing the system. It has
diuretic properties & was once used in the treatment of
obesity. The tea also makes a good remedy for
stubborn urinary tract infections (drink several cups daily for a month).
It is also an excellent addition to ointments, poultices & salves. It not only
decreases pain, but also helps to
reduce swelling such as with
torn ligaments. It is especially useful for this when mixed with pure Aloe Vera juice which helps penetrate all three layers of the skin. This in turn allows the chickweed to reach the underlying damaged areas & begin removing the pain & starting the healing process.
Chickweed tea helps
purify the blood &
carry out toxins & is even been known to help with
blood poisoning. It also
dissolves plaque in blood vessels, as well as
dissolving fatty tumors & substances then removing them from the body.
RECIPES:
Chickweed can be added to salads or cooked as a pot herb, tasting somewhat like spinach.
Chickweed tea:
take 1/4 cup of fresh Chickweed
add 1 cup boiling water steep for 10 min.
Strain out the herb & drink the tea hot. Take in ½ cup doses 2 to 4 times daily.
Chickweed has a mild diuretic property, promoting the flow of urine. Brewing a Chickweed tea is supposed to cleanse & soothe the kidneys & urinary tract & help relieve cystitis.
It won't deplete the body of minerals.
Chickweed Tea:
To 1 tbsp dried herb or 2 tbsp if fresh,
add 1 cup boiling water,
steep for 10 min.
Take in ½ cup doses 2 to 4 times daily, during a cold or flu.
Chickweed tincture:
Fill any jar, large or small, with fresh chopped chickweed & vodka.
Wait for 6 weeks & it's ready to use.
1 tsp of the tincture taken 2-3 times a day for 2-16 months is the usual course.
Chickweed tincture can help to dissolve a ovarian cyst or benign tumor.
It is a slow process & requires consistency.
Chickweed Pesto: 2-4 cloves of garlic, minced
1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil
2-3 cups freshly picked young chickweed leaves
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
pinch of sea salt
handful of walnuts (optional)
1 tbsp of lemon juice (optional)
lemon zest (optional)
Blend everything.
Serve this over pasta or just use it as a dip for crackers or vegetables. You can even freeze some in case you decide to make a lot at once.
Spring Salad:
Mix 4 cups fresh Chickweed
2 cups fresh watercress
1 cup fresh flowers like violets or dandelion buds &
2 tbsp of finely-chopped chives
Mix olive oil & herbal or plain apple cider vinegar for your dressing.
Chickweed & Orange Smoothie:
2 cups fresh orange juice
1 cup chickweed
1 tsp Aloe Vera juice
Blend everything.
Adding Aloe Vera gives additional cleansing benefits that provide polysaccharides for digestive & colon health.
BEAUTY:
Chickweed tea is excellent for use as an acne wash & it can even be added to a bath to help with sores, rashes, boils & burns.
Chickweed Obesity Tea:
Place 2 tbsp of fresh Chickweed in a cup & fill with boiling water.
Cover for at least 4 hours, then strain to drink.
Drinking a 1 l of Chickweed water daily is fine, but even 2 cups a day is supposed to help shed unwanted stored fat.
